Phuket One of the world's most idyllic
islands at the hub of southeast asia
Rated as one of the worlds most idyllic islands,
Phuket combines stunning scenery with the conveniences
of modern living. Forested mountains, rugged coastline
and many white-sand beaches provide a backdrop to sophisticated
hotels, resorts and fine restaurants. Zoning restrictions
protect Phukets natural environment.
With a population of more than a quarter of a million
people, Phuket is Thailands largest island and
its richest province after Bangkok. Phukets international
airport and developed infrastructure make it a major
hub of Southeast Asia and a convenient base for many
business people who work in the region. Thailands
political stability is a further attraction.
Phuket boasts some of the finest sporting facilities
in Asia. Golf, yachting, sea canoeing, snorkeling and
some of the worlds best scuba diving are just
some of its available activities. Phuket is also the
gateway to explore the hundreds of extraordinary islands
of the Andaman Sea. Good international schools are located
on Phuket and the Thai government plans to make the
island a cyber center for the country in the future.
Phuket has a long and fascinating
history. Formerly a way station for seafarers sailing
between Europe
and Asia, the island became rich
in the nineteenth century with
the development of tin mining.
Many Chinese immigrants made
their fortunes on the island and
some of the mansions they built
can be seen still on the streets of
Old Phuket. The Vegetarian Festival
in October is one of the most colorful
festivals in Thailand.
Unaffected by typhoons or earthquakes, Phuket enjoys
exceptionally agreeable weather. Summer clothing can
be worn year round and the water temperature is always
pleasant for swimming. Abundant seafood and many fine
restaurants have made Phuket into a gourmets paradise.
It is also renowned for the scope of its shopping at
reasonable prices and its entertaining nightlife.
